In my painting practice I am interested in painting outside of the confines of what is usually considered the standard rectangle - layering and disrupting the gestural painted mark with both manual and mechanised gestures and showcasing the luscious quality of paint. Within one painting you can see spin, smear, smudge, stroke, drip, crack and fissure, while the biomorphic shape breaks free of the traditional square frame.
My choice of colour reflects my love of the loud, zingy, bright and eye-catching. The colours that you sometimes might not think go together, but can make surprising combinations, especially when I force the paint to crackle and reveal a second layer underneath. Playing around with paint combinations that don’t come on the side of the tin is like alchemy and I love to experiment.
It’s an exciting journey, and means I have to really take a leap of faith and trust the process. The less I try to control how the painting turns out, the more it gives back to me in terms of beautiful texture and colour which shows off the qualities of the paint.
Welcome to my disruptive practice. Try not to get paint on you!
